Plan a Legacy Gift for Survivors of Homicide, Inc.

A legacy gift may enable you to make a significant impact on the future of Survivors of Homicide, Inc. (SOH) by supporting ongoing provisioning of our services for victims. Many legacy gifts, such as a gift in your will or trust, cost you nothing now.  Consider the legacy that you wish to leave to SOH. You can create a plan that will make a substantial gift more affordable, and, at the same time, preserve – or even enhance – your financial well-being. Popular legacy gift plans include:

Designating a gift in your will or trust:

  • If you are making a new will or trust, you can simply include SOH among the beneficiaries of your estate. SOH is a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit corporation, with Federal Taxpayer Identification Number 06-1499257.
  • If you already have a will, you can make SOH a beneficiary of your estate through a simple addition called a codicil.
  • If you are establishing a charitable trust that will provide lifetime income for one or two individuals, you can simply include SOH receiving the remainder when the trust terminates.

Your bequest language can be as simple as the following:

General Bequest:

I hereby bequeath to Survivors of Homicide, Inc., a tax-exempt organization, located at 530 Silas Deane Highway, Wethersfield, Connecticut 06109, the sum of ________ dollars (or, alternatively, ____% of my residuary estate, or include a description of property, assets, etc. that you wish to bequeath) for its general purposes.

Specific Bequest:

I hereby bequeath to Survivors of Homicide, Inc., a tax-exempt organization, located at 530 Silas Deane Highway, Wethersfield, Connecticut 06109, the sum of ________ dollars (or, alternatively, ____% of my residuary estate, or include a description of property, assets, etc. that you wish to bequeath). It is my wish that this gift be specifically used to support SOH Services. If it becomes inappropriate or impossible to accomplish the purpose of the gift as described herein, then the Board of Directors may designate this bequest to be used for the benefit of a substantially similar purpose.

Specifying a percentage of your estate as a bequest is generally preferable to specifying a dollar amount. It means that the beneficiaries of your estate, including tax-exempt not-for-profit organizations like SOH, will receive the proportion you intend, even though your estate may increase or decrease in value.

You can also explore the tax advantages of donating real estate, an insurance policy or a portion of your retirement plan or we can work with you, your family and your financial advisers to help you create a plan that meets both your financial and philanthropic goals. Please contact Arthur Jensen, President of SOH, at 860-539-6977 or, arthurjensen@att.net, to request more information about establishing a legacy gift or to notify us of an existing arrangement.
